Game Recap

Harrison High School ended its most successful soccer season ever with a 0-2 loss against perennial state champion, East Lansing, closing out the season after district and regional championships with a record of 13-7-3.

The score was 0-0 at the end of the first half, following a hard fought battle, waged mostly in the midfield. Both teams had a number of quality chances, but it was East Lansing that broke through late in the first half, adding an insurance goal as Harrison pressed forward for the equalizer.

Three Harrison players won all region and all state honors: Zach Harless, Jacob Honer, Hesham Moez. Varun Purusothaman was the most valuable player during the playoffs, posting shutouts in every contest but the state semifinal. All four were key during the East Lansing game, as were all district award winners Takaya Inukai, Jack Yardley and Ben Zaya. Other key contributors included Evan Boardway, Josh Corsi, Liam Percival, Derek Schmidt, Kevin Schwartz, Colin Stang and Tristan Strasberger.

Harrison’s three captains – Boardway, Honer and Zaya – get a large portion of the credit for our success, keeping teammates focused on soccer throughout the year and the season. We will greatly miss our seniors: Boardway, Corsi, Sean Elvy, Harless, Honer, Purusothaman, Corey Reynolds, Schwartz, Stang, Yardley and Zaya. But we have a good group of juniors stepping in to lead, including Inukai, Moez, Percival, Schmidt and Strasberger. Others who have a been a big part of our postseason run include Mitchell Cummings and Marvin Khudhur. The players who will need to step in to replace all of these graduating seniors include Ramadan Bajramaj, Nate Brunett and Justin Bugeja.

Though the loss was tough, we created some terrific memories in 2017, and they will be with us for a while.

Game Recap

Harrison High School soccer earned a berth in the Division 2 state semifinals by defeating Gibraltar Carlson by a score of 1-0 Thursday night. Jacob Honer had his third game winning goal of the postseason, sending a shot to the upper corner of the far post with about 17 minutes left in the game. Liam Percival got the assist.

Varun Purusothaman earned his fifth straight shutout of the postseason, stopping 16 shots by the opponent. Purusothaman has been the star for these playoffs, shutting out third ranked Cranbrook Kingswood and 17th ranked Gibraltar Carlson in succession.

Standouts in this game were primarily defensive. Zach Harless had his usual stellar game in the back, joined by Evan Boardway, Derek Schmidt and Takaya Inukai. Josh Corsi also played significant minutes in the back.

In the midfield, Honer, Colin Stang, Hesham Moez and Jack Yardley were key contributors. Yardley combined with Honer and Percival to create the game winning goal. Mitchell Cummings, Marvin Khudhur and Kevin Schwartz were also important in midfield roles.

Harrison moves to 13-6-3 on this, perhaps its best ever, season.

Game Recap

Harrison High School won the district final against Cranbrook Kingston by a score of 1-0 on Friday. Late in the second overtime period, Tristan Strasberger slipped a ball to Jacob Honer, who sent it toward goal where it was bobbled by the Cranbrook keeper and trickled into the net.

Varun Purusothaman recorded numerous quality saves to earn his 11th shutout. Harrison had many other standouts during the game. In the back, Derek Schmidt, Zach Harless, Evan Boardway, Takaya Inukai, and Ben Zaya were terrific, supporting one another throughout. Hesham Moez was a huge key in the back though, as he man-marked and severely limited Cranbrook’s best player.

In the midfield, Mitchell Cummings, Honer, Inukai, Kevin Schwartz, Colin Stang, Strasberger, and Jack Yardley did a great job of hustling for 100 minutes of soccer, working hard to defend and create offensive chances together.

Up front, Liam Percival and Zaya put a great deal of pressure on the Cranbrook defense, with later help by Yardley and Sean Elvy.

Harrison moves to 12-6-3 on the season. They will play Hamtramck at Farmington High School on October 24.
